A traditional Korean medicine shows powerful anti-wrinkle effects

As a person ages, the functions of their skin cells decline, which leads to the formation of wrinkles. In order to avoid this, researchers from Kyung Hee University suggest the use of the Korean herbal medicinal formula Seungma-Galgeun-Tang (SMGGT). Their study, which was published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, determined anti-wrinkle potential based on the ability of SMGGT to reduce matrix metalloproteinase-1 production and increase type-1 procollagen.

  • SMGGT is a combination of the following herbs: Cimicifugae Rhizoma, Puerariae Radix, Paeoniae Radix, and Glycyrrhizae Radix.
  • This traditional formulation was used for the treatment of smallpox, measles, and urticaria. Additionally, SMGGT has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects, as well as inhibitory effects on cytopathic activity.
  • Wrinkle formation is caused by reduced production of type I collagen, as well as increased production of matrix metalloproteinase. Exposure to UV can also increase the likelihood of wrinkle formation.
  • For this study, the components found in SMGGT were determined, as well as its potential cytotoxicity.
  • All tests for anti-wrinkle potential and cytotoxicity of SMGGT were conducted in human dermal fibroblasts.

Results of the study show that SMGGT can effectively inhibit matrix metalloproteinase-1 production. On the other hand, it promotes type-1 procollagen synthesis. Together, these results show that SMGGT has potential use in anti-wrinkle products and treatments.
